Memphis Police blog

Just ran across a really interesting blog about police in Memphis. Appears to be written by an anonymous officer in that department, and there are tons of comments. Many of the comments appear to be by other Memphis cops. Very interesting.

Some of the discussion reminds me of a topic I will discuss soon. Why do politicians talk about police and courts in revenue terms? This is a horrendous mindset. Police and courts should be about justice and public safety. More to come ...

Once you link generating money/revenue to something, it's original meanings and ways slowly get tossed by the wayside until they are virtually irrelevant.

Certain people who get arrested numerous times...post bail (actual or reduced; bottom line is what they can "afford") and are back on the streets quickly. Easy money in the court coffers. Should be in jail by this point instead.

Towns that rely on traffic tickets as "revenue"...can't let that be off or dip now can you...keep writing them.

My state of Massachusetts: the long-running idea that state police have ticket quotas to be met (even though it's stated to be "illegal")...even little perks like extra days off or the like get doled out for writing certain amounts (believe the Herald ran that story some months back).

It's pathetic.
